High School Position begins 26/27 school year.  Salary Schedule is based on the 2026-2027 school year.  

 

This is a 10-month/renewable position, that includes benefits of paid medical and leave.

 

  New hires typically begin at Step 1 on the Salary Schedule.

TITLE:  Special Education Life Skills Classroom Aide, SHS Transition Program .875 FTE

(7 hours per day)

 

PRIMARY FUNCTION: This position assists the Special Education teacher in establishing and maintaining a climate of learning within the high school Life Skills Program with a specific focus on transition programming (students 18-21).  Must exhibit a genuine understanding of children, and be able to provide for a wide range of student developmental needs in Life Skills in a variety of settings.  Learn and follow direct guidance as outlined by SPED case manager/teacher and documented student plans, and then be able to take initiative in responding to student’s academic, emotional and physical needs, including discipline and behavior management.  Due to the interpersonal nature of training for and working with special needs children, the need for a positive attitude and warm personality are considered essential.  May need to assist with hygiene and personal needs of students. May need to assist with physical management of aggressive students, and actively use district directed behavior management techniques and personal protective equipment.

 

RESPONSIBLE TO: Special Education Case Manager/Teacher, Building Principal, and District Director of Special Programs

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • ESSA Highly Qualified
  • Knowledge of child growth and development
  • Experience with students with disabilities
  • Experience in a classroom setting preferred
  • Mandt training preferred, will be required to complete necessary training annually
  • First Aid/CPR card preferred, will be required to complete necessary training annually

 

ASSIGNED RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Adhere to plans and guidance from SPED case manager/teacher for legal requirements of IDEA.
  • Work with students on a wide range of curriculum from all levels (K-12) of academic coursework, to independent living skills and transition to adulthood curriculum.
  • Maintain confidentiality of information about students and staff at all times.
  • Attend and participate in behavior and physical management certification training as directed by SPED case manager/teacher and Special Programs Director.
  • Implement behavior support plans and assist with challenging student behaviors, applying knowledge from district-required training, using appropriate strategies and techniques, and utilizing personal protective equipment as necessary.
  • Provide for the identified physical needs of students, including toileting, feeding protocols, therapy, and medical needs. This may involve attending regular delegations for procedures such as injections or medication administration, according to specified protocols and instructions.
  • Coordinate and collaborate with Career & Technical Education (CTE) instructors, Special Education instructors, and counselors.
  • Develop partnerships with the business community and post-secondary institutions (primarily Lane Community College).
  • Visit, monitor, and provide follow-up to students at worksites and in post-secondary training, collecting necessary data to document student progress on the job or in a post-secondary activity.
  • Communicate with workplace supervisors to ensure program quality.
  • Participate in activities related to the recruitment of potential clients.
  • Provide the following transition services: getting or arranging for the client to get to appointments, arranging for work experiences, job site coaching and job development.
  • Analyze work sites and match clients for work experiences or long-term placements that are consistent with students’ vocational goals.
  • Effectively use technology for organization, communication, and documentation.
  • Attend events or program activities in the community as assigned by SPED case manager. This can include supervising transportation and inclusion of students with daily job training sites, extracurricular events, and recreation activities, and others as assigned by the SPED case manager.
  • Tutoring and/or supervising students in the Life Skills program in SPED or Gen Ed classrooms as assigned by the special education case manager/teacher.
  • Report all data on student progress to the special education case manager/teacher.
  • Attend and participate in individual education program meetings for students as appropriate.
  • Type necessary reports, if required by case manager/teacher.
  • Establish and maintain professional, positive working relationships and open lines of communication with all building staff and administrators (classified, licensed, and support personnel), cooperating to resolve concerns in a professional manner.
  • Attend and participate in faculty meetings, parent/teacher conferences and evening school events as directed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Follow specified standards, policies, and procedures of the building and District.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Understand the legal requirements under IDEA for delivering services to students on IEP’s.
  • Emotional and physical stamina to perform duties as required by the designated task.
  • Maintains satisfactory attendance and punctuality.
  • Ability to organize and maintain an efficient time schedule.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with staff, students and the public.
  • Good communication, organization and computer skills.
  • Strong work ethic.
  • Effective and strong oral/written communication skills in order to work collaboratively with a variety of school personnel, as well as parents of students with disabilities and/or unique needs.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Work is performed in a wide variety of locations, including office and school environments.
  • Work with high stress student, family, or personnel situations.
  • Will require use of behavior management and physical management strategies as outlined by required training and individual student protocols.
  • May require occasional lifting up to 50 pounds. 
  • Involves sitting, walking, and attendance at evening and weekend meetings to support student attendance at events. 
  • Requires the use of computers and office equipment.
  • May require transfer to work in other Life Skills or Special Education classrooms as warranted by student need.

 

CONDITIONS:    This is a classified 10-month position.

 

SALARY:  Will be determined by terms of the current negotiated agreement. The amount due under the contract will be pro-rated monthly in accordance with district policy.
