JOB TYPE:                            This is a Substitute position, hours to be determined and vary

 

SUMMARY:                        Operate school buses under all types of weather conditions to transport students and other authorized persons over regular “to and from” routes and on activity trips as authorized by the school district officials.  Ensuring vehicle is in safe operating condition and ensuring safety of students during transport, loading and unloading from the bus.  Serve as a courteous representative of the Siuslaw School District.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills and/or abilities required.   • A minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Ability to meet the physical and mental standards necessary to perform the duties, and responsibilities of a school bus driver as required by the State and District policies and procedures.
  • Possess a valid Oregon Commercial Drivers’ License, Type B, with passenger, air brake and school bus endorsements, demonstrating a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of all applicable laws and regulations.
  • Possess an Oregon School Bus Drivers’ Certificate and maintain a driving record within ODE requirements.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision in performance of duties.
  • Willingness to attend workshops and training sessions.
  • Ability to understand and follow verbal and written communication.
  • Ability to work and communicate with students, parents and school personnel.
  • Ability to work harmoniously with others.

 ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Inspect assigned vehicles, both interior and exterior for the purpose of ensuring safety, appearance, and sanitation of vehicle and reports any deficiencies.
  • Reports all possible problem areas (safety hazards, parent/student concerns or complaints).
  • Maintain interior and exterior cleanliness of assigned district vehicles; sweeping, dusting and washing.
  • Maintains required licenses, certificates and first–aid card by attending required training classes and preserving a good driving record within ODE requirements.
  • Operate a school bus in accordance with laws of the State of Oregon and District policy/procedures.
  • Assists students and other passengers with safe loading and unloading from the bus in both emergency situations and normal transport.
  • Monitors students, parents and staff members during transit for the purpose of maintaining order and ensuring the safety of passengers. And taking precautions to provide for the health and safety of the passengers and to protect the equipment.
  • Report unsafe acts or conditions which require the attention of supervisory personnel.
  • Establishes open lines of communication with supervisor, administration and district staff, and cooperates to resolve problems in a professional manner.
  • Assesses incidents, complaints, accidents and potential emergency situations for the purpose of resolving or recommending a resolution to the situation.
  • Occasionally may be called upon to fill in/drive on routes other than normally assigned route.
  • And other related tasks as assigned by the transportation supervisor.

  • The employee has regular attendance at work and work activities, is punctual in meeting deadlines, attending meetings and following schedules.
  • The employee is dressed and groomed in a neat, clean and professional manner for the assignment and work setting.
  • The employee maintains the integrity of confidential information relating to a student, family, colleague or district patrons. The employee uses or relays personal information only in the course of performing assigned responsibilities and in the best interest of the individuals involved.
  • The employee follows all district or supervisor polices, rules, regulations, memos, emails, bulletins, announcements, applicable position description and reasonable requests by proper authority.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • This work is done on a school bus or in a school or district environment, and may include cleaning agents and gasoline smells, human bodily fluid cleanup and repetitive work.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works in temperatures above 100 and below 32 degrees and occasionally will walk on slippery surfaces.
  • The employee must be able to meet the deadlines with severe time constraints and interact with the public and other workers.
  • The employee has direct responsibility for the safety and wellbeing of others.
  • The noise level in the work environment is frequently loud to where you have to raise your voice to be heard.
  • May work with high stress student, family, or personnel situations.
  • May require occasional lifting up to 50 pounds.
  • Involves continuous sitting, occasionally required to walk or stand. The employees will   frequently bend or twist at the neck or trunk while performing the duties of this job.  The   employee frequently repeats the same hand, arm or finger motion many times. The employee frequently uses hand strength to grasp tools.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, depth perception and peripheral vision.
  • Drivers may be required to demonstrate ability to: open and close a manually operated bus entrance and exit control with a force of at least 30 pounds.
  • Climb and descend steps with a maximum step height of 17 ½ inches.
  • Operate two hand controls simultaneously and quickly.
  • Have a reaction time of ¾ of a second or less from the throttle to brake control.
  • Carry of drag a 125 person 30 feet in 30 seconds or less.
  • Depress a brake pedal with the foot to a pressure of at least 90 lbs.
  • Depress a clutch pedal with the foot to a pressure of at least 40 lbs. unless operating an

       automatic transmission.

  • Exit an emergency door opening 24 x 48 inches at least 42 inches from the ground in 10 seconds or less.
  • Visual acuity of at least 20/40 (Snellen) in each eye either with or without corrective lenses and a binocular acuity of at least 20/40 (Snellen) in each eye either with or without corrective lenses.
  • Perceives a forced whispered voice in the better ear not less than five feet with or without the use of hearing aid, or if tested by the use of an audiometric device. No hearing loss in the better ear greater than 40 decibels at 500 Hz, 1,000 Hz and 2,000 Hz with or without hearing aid when the audiometric device is calibrated to American National Standard Z25.5-1951. Drivers requiring a hearing aid shall wear a properly operating hearing aid at all times while driving and supervising students.
  • In addition to the listed physical requirements, the driver must meet physical examination requirements at outlines in the current Oregon Pupil Transportation Manual.
  • Requires the use of computers and office equipment.

 

CONDITIONS:   

 Temporary, on call work. No benefits provided.  At-will position. 

 

SALARY:              

Hourly pay based on the current school year classified pay scale.
